Vitamin B-1, or thiamine, is a white, crystalline substance with a yeast-like odor. The human body does not synthesize it, so it is ingested through food or dietary supplements. It is most abundant in cereal husks, yeast, and meat, but it is sensitive to high temperatures. Thiamine requirements are usually increased in pregnant women, smokers, during illness, under stress, or after surgical interventions.
